“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”
-2 Corinthians 4:7 (NIV)

Growing up my dad had a lock-box of some valuable collectors items. Mostly mint condition coins; out of circulation dollars, and a few other items of value. Eventually he would give it to me.

These valuable items were kept safe in a special container to separate them from lesser valuable things that would be considered “clutter. I’m willing to bet somewhere in your home: in your kitchen, nightstand, closet, etc., there is a junk drawer that is dedicated to the various clutter that accumulates over the course of living at a place for any length of time. But we may also have a designated spot for the important things: passports, paperwork, birth certificates, social security cards, etc.

So when Paul writes about treasure in jars of clay, or as the NASB translation reads: “earthen vessels,” he is drawing a metaphor of the glory of God’s grace revealed in Jesus being given to imperfect people like me and you.

Our faith has been handed down and shaped by imperfect people since Jesus ascended into heaven. The men and women of faith who taught me were imperfect; the men and women of faith who taught them were imperfect, and so on. I am imperfect, and so are you! (How’s that for self-help!)

God uses us imperfect creatures with the mystery and majesty of His message. This leads to great opportunities and great challenges. But we are reminded that Paul finishes the thought: “this power is from God and not from us.” It’s God’s message, we’re just the messengers: blemishes and all.

May it be so with us,
Matt
